Or finding the perfect apartment and the right schooling options for your children at your planned destination. there are plenty of things to think about and take care of before your international move to your new home.
In addition to these – settling-in at the new location can be quite challenging. The language obstacles, the cultural differences and the outlook of starting a new chapter is a whole new experience felt strongly by anyone who is planning to move abroad. We have chosen some important considerations before moving overseas.
Choose on time
International moving companies in the Northern Hemisphere have their peak season in the summer months from mid-May to mid-September with June & July the two top months. Make sure you decide on an international moving company at the very least one month prior to the planned packing date to ensure they are able to meet your preferred dates for packing and loading at origin. The apartment and house agencies and landlords in some countries, such as Switzerland, are often especially busy at the end of each month, and the residence handover must also be booked well in advance.
When you move overseas, for example from Switzerland to Australia or New Zealand, please bear in mind it will take up to 2-2.5 months for your shipment to be transported from door to door. This is based on the regular sea freight transit time and smooth sailing, without any delays such as in the Suez channel in 2021. In Switzerland, depending on accessibility to your home, your container would be loaded directly at your residence, transported by barge or train to Rotterdam or Antwerp, and from there on be transported by sea vessel to the destination port of entry. Upon arrival your container will be customs cleared, the port charges settled, and the delivery organized to your new residence.
Things to know before packing
For safety and security reasons, some countries no longer accept international shipments that are packed by the owner of the household goods. Furthermore, any harm suffered to belongings you pack yourself may not be covered under transit insurance. It is therefore advisable to hire a moving company to pack all of your household items and personal items when moving internationally, after all there is always the option to prepare some more personal belongings for the crew to inspect. At Atlas International Movers we will pack all of your household and personal items professionally. Thanks to our many years of experience and good collaboration with our local partners, we will ensure that you will have no surprises when you’re moving internationally.
But, before having your belongings packed, you’ll need to keep some things like appliances, electronics, medication and important documents at the forefront of your mind.
- Important papers and documents – Put aside any important documents during the move. Make sure that documents like medical records, school records, passports, visa, driver’s licenses, emergency numbers and health insurance cards are kept in a safe place before the crew’s arrival.
- Electronics and appliances – Check if your electronics are dual voltage and compatible with the appropriate foreign outlet, and if not, check if they are possible to use with a converter. Perhaps avoid taking appliances if there is no compatibility, as you may have to consider purchasing them new at your destination.
- Medication – Finding a new doctor may take time in a new location. It is better to plan ahead and bring a few months’ worth of necessary medication to get through the first months. Do check with your move coordinator on the right way to export and import if you intend to bring large quantities, as some countries do have restrictions, especially for prescribed medication.
Storing your belongings
When moving overseas, you may leave behind furniture which you might no longer need, or because you are only moving for a limited time and do not want to relocate your complete household. In any case it is important to decide what you would like to do with your belongings prior to the move. There is the option to sell, donate, or dispose of them. But if your move is for a short term and if you’re planning to move back eventually, a comfortable choice is to store your items in our secure storage facilities so you have the familiar items when you return.
